They never tested transmissibility for original virus at the time that they made the claims it reduced transmission, this was admitted by Pfizer.
The unwillingness to update recommendations based on lower efficacy and change protocols and policies based on said lowered efficacy while acting like everything was still a clear-cut case is what undermined trust. This isn't debatable.
We GREATLY hurt an entire generation's education and destroyed unbelievable amounts of middle class wealth. How it was handled was catastrophic. Our leaders and healthcare industry should be ashamed of themselves.

Because of how it was handled you'll never get Americans to do it again without mandates and penalties. Sure 20% of people will do whatever they are told (I still see someone masking now and again) but it's pretty obvious in retrospect that the only people who needed to mask were older people and those in poor health. Everyone else got the virus and virtually no one (outside those categories) died.
Make no doubt about it; there will be another virus. Governments across the globe showed how easy it is to control people via fear.
